Cooking with Sara: Mischievous Meringues

It's Thursday, so it's my day to cook for the food blog!

Can you believe that I'd never made Halloween-themed treats before??  (I'm not counting pumpkin-shaped sugar cookies.)  Maybe that means I'm not attending enough Halloween parties?  Regardless, these little guys were fun and easy to make!  I'm thinking that there are a million ways I can change them up for other holidays, and I could go a little nuts spelling out words to give out as treats.  The possibilities are darn near endless!  Oh, and we really liked eating them too - that's the important part, right?  They're crunchy, and not too sweet, with a subtle vanilla flavor.  Also!  They're fat-free, milk-free, and gluten-free, hurrah!

Crunchity Yummy Goodness.

Cooking with Jenny: Apple Cake with Cream Cheese Icing

Yes, you read that right - Jenny!  Remember when I told you about my long-lost friend from 2nd grade?  She was ridiculously sweet enough to sub in for me on the Blah blog this week, and she whipped up this amazing cake!!!

Definitely, definitely go check out her recipe:

She's also got a blog that's one of my absolute favorites - Momedy Central.  I only wish I could write as well as she does.  Seriously.

I also want a piece of cake.  Pronto.

Cooking with Sara: Gooey Caramel Corn (again)

It's Thursday!  My day to cook for the Blah blog!

Some of you longtime listeners first time callers readers may recognize that photo.  It from my Gooey Caramel Corn post last year.  You see, last night I whipped up two varieties of one recipe, and they both FLOPPED.  I have no idea how such a simple and food blogger-loved recipe (seriously, it's been all over the food blogs over the last 6 months) could have failed so miserably, but fail it did.  So I opted to introduce the Blah crowd to this recipe, because I love it to death, and because I've been craving it for days now.  I have no idea when I'll actually be able to make it next (remember those weddings this weekend and the cupcakes I'm doing?), but I'm content to at least have memories to get me by for now.

Proof that I attempted a recipe last night:

Also, Bo refuses to touch these spatulas.  I think
he thinks they'll make him grow boobs or something.
If that's all it took, you can bet I'd be..well.. yeah :)

This Week

So, in lieu of sharing some cute story, I'm going to blab about what I've got going on this week.  Because nothing is more fun than reading a litany of items off someone's to-do list.  Right?

Let's just fast forward to Thursday, because Monday and Tuesday are typical Cake Pops-making sessions, and I'm just utterly over talking (read: whining) about them, so there.  Ok, so Thursday begins my work on cupcakes for A Wedding.  That's right, folks, I'm doing wedding cupcakes for a couple we adore here in Atlanta.  The bride came over to my house a couple of times to play taste-test, and we settled on 3 flavors:
  • Vanilla Pound Cake with Raspberry filling and Cream Cheese Frosting
  • Chocolate Pound Cake with Chocolate Pudding filling and Chocolate Fudge glaze
  • Carrot Cake with Browned Butter glaze (<-- Holy Moly, you need to try this recipe, it's that amazing)
So, I'm delivering 60+ cupcakes to her wedding on Friday afternoon, and then I'll spend the remainder of the day fretting about what people think and if they like them.  Even though I thought the recipes turned out freaking amazing, I'll still worry, that's just me.  Perfectionist, much, sara?  Yeah.  I promise to take photos with my fancy camera and post them sometime next week when I come back up for air.  I'll even try to have Bo take one of me with the cupcakes so it'll be a 2fer with cupcakes and hair dye.

So that's Thursday and Friday.  Guess what we're doing on Saturday morning?  You'll never guess, so I'll just tell you - We're flying to Miami for another wedding.  Yes.  Thankfully, I'm not doing any baking for that one, or I might just have a meltdown and disappear into a puddle of overwhelmption (I'm coining that one) (because I'm so guilty of it).  We get to spend all of Sunday there, so hopefully I'll be able to recover with nothing to do but bum around meeting more of Bo's friends, because I've only met approximately three zillion by now.  Maybe we'll even swing by the beach again.  This photo is from the last time - and wedding - we were there:
Note to self:  Wearing black at the beach looks weird.  Don't do that again.
Also:  Bo looks short here.  Let's be clear - I'm 5'5", he's a yummy 6'3".

Cooking with Sara: Baked Coconut Shrimp

It's Friday Thursday, and that means it's my day to cook for the food blog!  We went through a bit of a re-org over at the Blah blog, so I'm now the Thursday girl.  Please do come visit me on my new day!  { bats eyelashes }

This week, I made Baked Coconut Shrimp - easy, yummy, rich, and does not require a speck of oil.  We both loved them!  I think they'd shine as an appetizer; they're a little too rich for a main course.  I think I'll make them the next time people come over for dinner.  Any volunteers? :)

Cooking with Sara: Honey Mustard Chicken

It's Friday!  And that means it was my day to cook for the food blog!

Happy October, everyone!  October is hands-down my favorite month of the year.  The leaves change, the weather cools, I drag out all my cute sweaters, and the anticipation for Thanksgiving and Christmas nearly bursts out of my soul.  I love October.

Speaking of Thanksgiving (and not of October, one of our two original topics, because I'm the queen of tangential conversation), this photo is from Thanksgiving last year.  Gotta love a San Diego Thanksgiving - I'm only wearing boots for cuteness' sake; it was actually plenty warm enough to be wearing flip flops.
